Sam Haber's suggestons on Society and the Sea Projects (Nov. 5, 2008):
Hey Carl,
I have a feeling that many of the students may want to change their
topic. But here's what most of the students wrote down for thir topic.
A topic like "Pebbles and Penguins" or "Oceans and World Music" are
doable but may be hard to fit the format of a research paper.
I also think it might be a better idea to decrease the length a little,
otherwise the papers might have a lot of nonsense. I was think making
the minimum 6 pages and the maximum 10 pages, double spaced.
I will grade on the quality and format of the paper, looking for:
-An Abstract and/or introduction (Science with data will have abstract,
while history paper will just have introduction)
-At least Four references and proper citation (web pages are OK)
-Organized and easy to read
-Results and Discussion (Your Argument and case studies)
-Conclusion
-Well spoken, concise and organized presentation
I would reccommend that the students look at 'Georef' and 'Web of Science'
in order to get an idea of a research paper format.
We can discuss more on Thursday
Regards
Sam
