Definition of turbulence: turbulence is defined as an eddy-like state of fluid motion where the inertial vortex forces of the eddies are larger than any other forces that that tend to damp the eddies out. Definition of fossil turbulence: fossil turbulence is a perturbation in any hydrophysical field produced by turbulence that persists after the fluid is no longer turbulent at the scale of the perturbation. Airzooka Team 5 MAE 101a Summer 1, 2011 presentation to class. Powerpoint version. Pdf version. Fluid mechanics of the airball is a spin stabilized rollup of a turbulent boundary layer similar to that of a wingtip vortex on an aircraft. Vortex breakdown occurs when the stabilization scale (epsilon/Omega^3)^1/2 increases to the size of the airball as Omega decreases. Just as Ozmidov scales (epsilon/N^3)^1/2 are fossils of previous turbulence, so are spin stabilization scales.
